How To Create an Ofrenda For Your Home

Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two-day celebration that reunites the living and the departed. In Mexican culture, families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor ancestors and loved ones. The ofrenda is a collection of offerings dedicated to those departed and includes a collection of photos, personal items, food, flowers, candles and other traditional items in Mexican, Spanish or Aztec culture. Creating an ofrenda can be as creative or simple as you would like and come in several shapes, colors and themes.
You don’t have to be from Mexico or have Mexican heritage to make an ofrenda or celebrate Dia De Muertos. The holiday is about honoring, remembering and celebrating your loved ones who have passed on. You can create your own ofrenda that is authentic to your heritage and home.
Here’s how you can create your own ofrenda at home.

Step 1 – Create your Ofrenda Base
You can create the base of your ofrenda using items you may already have at home. It is common to create 2-3 levels that mimic a pyramid shape, where the lower part is the largest and the top portion is the smallest.
I created mine using a small folding table, an 11” wide wood board and a 6” wide wood board.
*Tip: If you don’t have a saw at home, you can ask your local Home Depot to cut the boards down to your desired dimensions.
Step 2 – Personalize Your Ofrenda
The most important thing is that your items should be personal and authentic to you. There is no right or wrong way to do it. That said, it is most common to include photos of the departed and some of their personal items. Other common items include marigolds, sugar skulls and incense.
Step 3 – Incorporate 4 Earth Elements
In traditional ofrendas, it is common to include items that represent the four earth elements
Earth: Food to feed your ancestors for their visit and celebrate their arrival
Water: To quench the thirst and purify your ancestor’s souls
Fire: Candles to light the way and help the souls find their way to the ofrenda
Wind: Papel Picado that will move in the wind when the souls have arrived and alert their presence to the living

Paso 1 – Crea tu Base Ofrenda
Puede crear la base de su ofrenda utilizando elementos que ya tenga en casa. Es común crear 2-3 niveles que imiten una forma de pirámide, donde la parte inferior es la más grande y la parte superior es la más pequeña.
Creé el mío usando una pequeña mesa plegable, un tablero de madera de 11" de ancho y un tablero de madera de 6" de ancho.
*Consejo: Si no tiene una sierra en casa, puede pedirle a su Home Depot local que corte las tablas a las dimensiones deseadas.
Paso 2 – Personaliza tu Ofrenda
Lo más importante es que sus artículos sean personales y auténticos para usted. No hay una forma correcta o incorrecta de hacerlo. Dicho esto, lo más común es incluir fotos de los difuntos y algunos de sus objetos personales. Otros artículos comunes incluyen cempasuchil, calaveritas, e incienso.
Paso 3: Incorporar 4 Elementos de la Tierra
En las ofrendas tradicionales, es común incluir elementos que representan los cuatro elementos de tierra.
Tierra: Comida para alimentar a tus ancestros por su visita y celebrar su llegada
Agua: Para saciar la sed y purificar las almas de tus antepasados
Fuego: Velas para iluminar el camino y ayudar a las almas a encontrar el camino a la ofrenda
Viento: Papel Picado que se moverá con el viento cuando hayan llegado las almas y alertará su presencia a los vivos
